EMOTION FOCUSED THERAPY

Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) was developed by Leslie
Greenberg and Susan Johnson from Canada in the 1980’s.  EFT is
an experiential therapy, with a strong connection to John Bowlby’s
Attachment Theory, Carl Roger’s Person-Centred Therapy
combined with some parts of Gestalt, Psychodynamic, and some
of the style of Salvador Minuchin.

EFT focuses on emotional change.  EFT achieves this by re-
experiencing and re-processing emotions from the past that may
be impacting on our lives at the moment, either by utilizing
maladaptive coping behaviours, or by impeding emotional growth.
EFT is an experiential therapy, re-experiencing the emotions, and
processing them at a cognitive as well as an emotional level,
allows us the freedom to work through them, hear their message,
and then leave them behind.

Psychological studies have shown EFT to be effective in working
with grief and loss, depression, anxiety, stress, and many of the
emotionally based impediments to a happier life style.

Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) has been especially
successful with marriage counselling, and relationship
counselling.

EFT incorporates John Bowlby’s Attachment Theory, which
includes the belief that all humans are seeking a safe, secure,
trustworthy relationship to be there to guide, support, and nurture
them.  Having a safe secure base, will provide each of us with the
independence to try new endeavours, explore the world, take risks,
because we know there is someone we can depend on to go back
to.  Not having a secure safe base, makes us less able to explore
the world and less able to take a risk, as we do not have that safe
haven to retreat to.

Most couple difficulties can be traced to one or both not feeling safe
and secure, and making inappropriate attempts to elicit the
reassurance that the other is really there for them.

Please note that Emotion Focused Therapy has nothing whatever
to do with the emotional freedom techniques (patented 2007), or
tapping therapy, which you will see in Google searches.

Emotion Focused Therapy is a scientifically validated process, with
many  international studies over 20 odd years, verifying its
effectiveness.

My work includes family therapy, relationship counselling, divorce
counselling, and couple therapy.
